Japandi style, a timeless trend

Updated: Feb 27

What Japandi means?

Japandi is a design style that has gained significant recognition in recent years for its fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics. The word "Japandi" was born from the union of "Japanese" and "Scandi," this last word referring to Scandinavia.

The Japanese aesthetic is guided by the Wabi-Sabi philosophy, which means finding beauty in imperfection and modest things, while the Scandinavian aesthetic is guided by the lifestyle concept of Hygge, which emphasizes a calm, comfortable, and simple way of living.

History of the Japandi style

The history of the Japandi style dates back centuries, possibly around 1867 when diplomatic relations between Denmark and Japan were established then despite the Second World War they continued their trade and cultural exchange, allowing Danish architects, designers, and artists to travel to Japan and draw inspiration from the Wabi-Sabi philosophy, which they later combined with their own Hygge lifestyle. Today, globalization is making this style more contemporary and popular, turning it into a trend now a days.

Interior design: What to consider?

To achieve the Japandi interior design style, there are several key elements to consider. The foundation is minimalism, which is all about having a simple life. The objective is to have clean, uncluttered, and functional spaces that promote peace and tranquility. Use a neutral color palette with soft, calming hues such as beige, white, gray, and pastels to create a serene and inviting atmosphere.

For materials, use natural ones such as wood, bamboo, rattan, and stone to bring a sense of warmth and coziness to your space. It's important to use handcrafted, unique items that showcase the natural textures, such as pottery or woven textiles. Finally, emphasize the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces, integrating nature and natural light into the building to promote a sense of calm and relaxation.

To guide you a bit more we have made a Mood Board following these key elements.
